Air-Con Regassing In Worcester

Why does my air-con blow warm air?

A common reason why the air conditioning system is only blowing warm air, is due to a lack of refrigerant gas. However, there can be many other causes, such as a faulty electrical system, broken cooling fans, or a broken compressor. Whatever the reason, it’s best to get it checked to improve the cooling and de-misting functions, and the air quality inside the cabin.

FAQs | Air Conditioning Regas & Servicing

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about air conditioning issues and the repair process. If you notice any problems with your vehicle’s air conditioning system, get in touch today for a quote or to get your vehicle booked in for an air-con service.

What is an air-con "re-gas"?

An air conditioning re-gas service replaces the old air-con refrigerant with new gas. Over time, the refrigerant inside the system depletes at approximately 10% per year, this causes it to stop cooling and de-misting the cabin properly. An air-con re-gas involves removing any old refrigerant & AC oil, carrying out a vacuum to remove moisture, a vacuum leak test, adding new oil into the AC compressor and then refilling it with fresh refrigerant before a final check of the system.

An air conditioning service is a comprehensive check to ensure that there are no leaks or damage to the system. Here’s a summary of the steps involved:

  • Initial inspection using a manifold gauge to check for obvious damage.
  • Removal of old air-con refrigerant gas.
  • Vacuum pumps are used to remove any excess moisture.
  • The system is then checked for leaks.
  • The system is then re-gassed using the new refrigerant.
  • The performance is tested to ensure the system runs properly and at the correct pressure.

The price of a re-gas/ air-con service varies depending on the type of refrigerant gas required by the vehicle. For an accurate quote, please get in touch without our team today and let us know the make, model and age of the vehicle or provide us with the registration number.

  • Improved cooling of the air conditioning system.
  • Improved demisting to reduce window fog.
  • Prevention of more expensive repairs.
  • Improvement to the air quality i.e. less chance of mould and bacterial growth.
  • Refrigerant gas leaks which happen naturally over time, or due to broken parts in the system.
  • Moisture in the air conditioning system.
  • Lack of use which can cause the seals to dry out and crack.
  • Blocking or damage to the condenser in the system.
  • It ensures that the cabin is comfortable in warm weather.
  • It helps to de-fog the windows efficiently in humid environments.
  • It improves air quality in the cabin and helps to prevent bacterial and fungal buildup.
  • It can prevent expensive future repairs.

Yes. Air conditioning increases engine load, so fuel consumption typically rises by around 3–10%, depending on the outside temperature and how hard the system is working.

At motorway speeds, using the air conditioning is often more efficient than driving with the windows open, as open windows create additional aerodynamic drag.

On hybrid and electric vehicles, air conditioning uses battery power instead of fuel, which can slightly reduce driving range.

Tip: Running your air conditioning regularly throughout the year also helps keep the system lubricated and reduces the risk of seals drying out, which can help prevent costly repairs in the future.

To find air conditioning leaks we use professional nitrogen and hydrogen leak detection gas to safely pressurise your air conditioning system without releasing refrigerant. Hydrogen molecules are extremely small, allowing us to detect even the tiniest leaks that refrigerant alone may not reveal.

Depending on the suspected fault, we use a combination of:

– Leak detection spray to identify visible leaks
– An electronic hydrogen leak detector (sniffer) to detect escaping hydrogen gas
– An acoustic leak detector (acoustic camera) to locate high-pressure leaks by listening for escaping gas

This method allows us to accurately pinpoint leaks before carrying out repairs, helping to avoid unnecessary parts replacement and repeat regassing avoiding the use of the common and often ellusive AC DYE to identify leaks.

As an F-Gas certified workshop, we are legally and professionally required to repair known leaks before recharging your vehicle’s air conditioning system. Simply topping up a leaking system releases harmful refrigerant into the atmosphere and is not a proper or lasting repair.

If we suspect a leak, we’ll carry out professional leak detection using specialist equipment to identify the fault, recommend the necessary repairs and only regas the system once it has been repaired and tested. This ensures your air conditioning performs as it should while remaining compliant with current F-Gas regulations.

Some common signs that your car needs an air conditioning/ re-gas service include:

  • The air conditioning system is only blowing warm air and isn’t cooling properly.
  • Hissing sounds when the air conditioning system is on.
  • Strange smells coming from the air vents.
  • Visible leaks around the vents.
  • Excessive condensation in the cabin which takes a long time to clear.

An air conditioning re-gas service typically takes 45-60 minutes to complete. You are welcome to wait or can drop the vehicle off and collect it later if you prefer.

Most vehicles need an air conditioning re-gas every 2 years as the refrigerant gas will drain over time. This helps to keep the system in good working order. If you find that your air conditioning system isn’t working properly and it has been less than 2 years since the last service, then you should get it checked by a garage as it’s a sign that there is a leak or other issue with the system.

There are two main types of air-con gas (refrigerant):

  • R134A – commonly found in cars manufactured before 2014
  • R1234YF – found in all cars manufactured after 2017

If your vehicle was manufactured between 2014-2016, it could have either type of gas. We will check which gas your vehicle requires before we complete the service.
