OUR SERVICES
DPF Cleaning & Repairs
As DPF Doctor members, our approach to DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) faults is focused on identifying why the filter has become blocked, rather than simply cleaning it or carrying out a forced regeneration. We carry out a DPF assessment to identify any underlying faults before advising on the correct repair. Where appropriate, we can professionally clean the DPF or replace the DPF and confirm the system is operating correctly, helping prevent the fault from simply returning weeks later. We do not perform DPF cleaning or replacement without completing our industry-leading DPF assessment first. This avoids temporary fixes and ensures we get to the root cause of the fault.
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Cleaning in Worcester

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) plays a crucial role in controlling your vehicle’s emissions but when it becomes blocked, there is often an underlying reason why it has been unable to regenerate correctly. Rather than simply cleaning or forcing a regeneration, we focus on identifying and correcting the root cause of the problem first. Once any underlying faults have been addressed, we can advise on the correct DPF cleaning or regeneration process to help prevent the same problem from returning.
As a DPF Doctor accredited specialist, Recharged Automotive follows proven diagnostic and testing processes to accurately identify DPF-related faults and provide the correct solution for your vehicle.

What Does The DPF Do?
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is part of the car’s exhaust system. It traps and removes carbon from the exhaust before it is released into the air. The DPF has a honeycomb ceramic structure which traps soot, stores it and then it burns off when the exhaust temperature is increased. The DPF is an essential component required to help diesel vehicles meet emissions standards.

What are the signs of a blocked DPF?
The main signs of a blocked DPF are a DPF warning light or engine management light on the dashboard. Sometimes the vehicle will also display a message indicating a DPF or emissions fault.
Some other symptoms include:
- Loss of power – in severe cases a “limp mode” is activated which is when the ECU limits the speed and RPM.
- Reduced fuel economy – as the exhaust gases struggle to push through the blocked filter.
- Black exhaust smoke – this is a possible indication of a clogged DPF filter.

FAQs | DPF Cleaning
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about diesel particulate filter regeneration and repairs. If you suspect any issues with your car’s DPF, get in touch with our team today who can diagnose the problem, clean the filter, and repair any damage.
Why does the DPF become blocked?
The DPF becomes blocked when the soot accumulates and is not burnt off properly. The main cause of this is due to frequent short trips. When the car is driven at lower speeds for short journeys or in stop-start traffic, the engine doesn’t maintain the required temperature needed to burn off the soot (known as regeneration). If the DPF doesn’t regenerate properly, the soot will build up and clog the filter. This is why diesel vehicles are best suited for high-mileage drivers. If the vehicle is only driven on short journeys, then the DPF will get clogged much more quickly.
A blocked DPF can also be an indicator that there is another fault with the vehicle, causing a knock-on effect on the DPF. With our DPF Doctor approved assessment, our expert technicians will be able to diagnose any related issues.
How is the DPF cleaned?
A clogged DPF can be cleaned by:
- Passive regeneration – this is the first option which will usually work on a DPF which isn’t overly clogged.
- Active Regeneration – carried out on a carefully monirored road test to observe DPF temperatures
- Static Regeneration – this is where the vehicle is forced to perform a stationary regen. Not always advised as can damage the DPF
- Chemical cleaning – using cleaning agents and additives in the exhaust to break down the soot.
At Recharged we only carry out active regeneration during carefully monitored road tests to observe DPF temperatures, pressures so we can understand if the DPF is able to regenerate correctly without being forced. If the DPF is blocked so much that an active regeneration is not possible we can offer a chemical clean which dissolves the soot and is then flushed. We do not any circumstances advocate static regenerations which is forcing the engine to carry out a stationary DPF regen, or the use off the shelf DPF cleaners. Static regens can cause increased risk of damage to the DPF due to increase in temperatures, same with some off the shelf DPF cleaners which raise the burn temperaure of the fuel which can again actually damage the monolith of the DPF internally.
In severe cases, the DPF may need to be replaced if cleaning is insufficient to remove the blockage.
What is the difference between passive and active DPF regeneration?
When the engine reaches the required temperature to burn off the soot collected in the DPF, this is known as passive regeneration. It happens naturally during longer drives and at steady speeds, for example when driving on the motorway. Active DPF regeneration is an automated process when the ECU raises the exhaust temperature to burn off the accumulated soot.
What is the difference between soot & ash in a DPF?
Think of a DPF like a wood-burning fire. Soot is the wood. When the fire gets hot enough, the wood burns and reduces in volume. This is similar to a DPF regeneration, where high exhaust temperatures burn away the accumulated soot.
Ash is what is left behind after the wood has burned. It cannot be burned again, so it gradually builds up inside the DPF over the vehicle’s lifetime. Eventually, excessive ash may require professional off-car cleaning or, in some cases, replacement of the DPF.
What common DPF faults can we fix?
Modern diesel vehicles monitor the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) using pressure sensors, temperature sensors and calculated soot and ash levels. When the system detects a problem, it may store a DPF-related fault code and illuminate the engine management or DPF warning light.
Some of the most common DPF fault codes found on Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, CUPRA, Škoda, Mercedes-Benz and BMW vehicles include:
P2002 – Diesel Particulate Filter Efficiency Below Threshold
P2463 – Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction / Excessive Soot Accumulation
P242F – Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction / Ash Accumulation
P2452 – DPF Differential Pressure Sensor Circuit Fault
P2453 – DPF Differential Pressure Sensor Range / Performance
P2454 – DPF Differential Pressure Sensor Circuit Low
P2455 – DPF Differential Pressure Sensor Circuit High
P2458 – DPF Regeneration Duration / Regeneration Taking Too Long
P2459 – DPF Regeneration Frequency / Regenerating Too Frequently
P244B – DPF Differential Pressure Too High
A DPF fault code does not automatically mean the filter needs cleaning or replacing. A blocked DPF is often the result of another engine, emissions or sensor fault preventing successful regeneration.
Our approach is to identify why the DPF has become blocked or why the fault code has been generated first. Once the root cause has been established, we can advise on the correct repair, regeneration or cleaning procedure to help prevent the same problem from returning.
What happens if a blocked DPF is ignored?
A blocked DPF can cause severe damage to the engine if left untreated. It will cause the exhaust system to become inefficient, and for gases to build up in the system and increase back-pressure. This puts strain on the system and leads to premature wear and potentially very expensive damage in future.
How long does a DPF cleaning service take?
On average, it takes a couple of hours to regenerate and clean a clogged DPF, however if it is more severe then it may take longer than this.
Will a blocked DPF result in an MOT failure?
A blocked DPF can lead to an MOT failure indirectly, as it is likely to cause it to fail the emissions test carried out as part of an MOT. Also, if it causes the DPF warning light (or engine management light) to be illuminated on the dashboard, this will result in an automatic failure. If the DPF has been tampered with or is missing entirely, the car will automatically fail the MOT test.
Will the DPF need cleaning or replacing?
This will depend on the specific situation. If there is no history of DPF issues, then it’s likely that the DPF just needs regenerating or cleaning. However, if there have been multiple DPF warnings over a longer period of time, or multiple failed regeneration attempts, then it may need to be replaced. We can assess the DPF and how best to proceed.
