Lighting Repairs in Worcester
Lighting and electrical faults are among the most common reasons vehicles fail an MOT. While some faults are as simple as a failed bulb, modern German vehicles increasingly use LED, Xenon, Matrix LED and adaptive lighting systems controlled by sensors, cameras and electronic control modules. We can diagnose and repair lighting faults including failed LED units, flickering lights, adaptive headlight faults, levelling problems, wiring faults and control module issues, as well as replace conventional bulbs and complete light units where required.

Car Bulb Replacement In Worcester
Will a faulty light result in an MOT failure?
Yes, any issues with the lights will result in an MOT failure. In fact, the most common reason why cars fail their MOT tests is due to a blown bulb, accounting for around 18% of all failures. Making sure that all the lights are working before taking your vehicle to it’s MOT is always a good idea. Any issues with the lights will be recorded as a defect under the “dangerous” category. Dangerous defects will result in an MOT failure and mean that the car cannot be driven until the fault is fixed.

FAQs | Car Lighting Repairs
Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about car lights. If you have any issues with the lights on your vehicle such as blown bulbs, flickering, or dashboard warning lights, get in touch with our team today.
What are the most common lighting issues on a car?
Modern vehicle lighting faults can involve much more than a blown bulb. Common problems include…
- LED, Xenon and Matrix LED headlight failures
- Adaptive headlight and cornering light faults
- Headlight levelling and ride-height sensor faults
- LED driver and headlight control module failures
- Flickering or intermittent headlights
- Water ingress and condensation inside light units
- Daytime Running Light (DRL) faults
- Wiring, connector and communication faults
- Automatic headlight and light sensor problems
- Headlight warning lights and dashboard messages
Modern German vehicles use increasingly complex intelligent lighting systems, so correct diagnosis is important before replacing expensive headlights, control modules or sensors.
Why do I have a bulb failure warning when all the lights are working?
Modern German vehicles continuously monitor their exterior lighting systems, so a bulb or lighting warning can appear even when all the lights seem to be working.
Common causes include an incorrect or non-compatible bulb, LED conversion bulbs, incorrect electrical resistance, an intermittent bulb or LED failure, damaged wiring or connectors, water ingress, or a fault within a headlight or lighting control module.
On vehicles with LED, Xenon, Matrix LED or adaptive headlights, specialist diagnostics may be required to identify which lighting circuit or control unit is triggering the warning.
What is the difference between halogen and LED lights?
Halogen lights have a warmer, more yellowish glow compared to LED lights which have a brighter and whiter appearance. More modern vehicles are now being fitted with LED lights as they result in better visibility and are more energy efficient. There is also a third type called Xenon, which some vehicles made in the 90s and 00s may be fitted with. HID lights are more of a blue-white colour and are more efficient than halogen bulbs, but not as much as LED bulbs.
Halogen | Xenon | LED |
Warm, yellow light | Blue-white light | Cool white |
Low efficiency | Moderate efficiency | High efficiency |
Reach maximum brightness instantly | Take a few seconds to achieve full brightness | Reach maximum brightness instantly |
Common in older or less expensive vehicles | Common in vehicles in the 90s-00s | Common in modern vehicles |
Moderate brightness | High brightness | Ultra-high brightness |
What are Matrix LED headlights & how do they work?
Matrix LED headlights use multiple individually controlled LED segments rather than a single conventional light source. Using information from cameras, sensors and other vehicle systems, the headlights can automatically adjust the light pattern around other vehicles while maintaining high-beam illumination in other areas of the road.
Modern systems can contain LED arrays, Chip-on-Board (COB) technology, control modules, cooling systems, cameras and vehicle communication networks. More advanced systems, such as Audi Matrix LED, Mercedes-Benz DIGITAL LIGHT and BMW Adaptive LED, can provide highly precise and continuously changing light patterns.
When faults occur, specialist diagnostic equipment may be required to test the headlight electronics, LED modules, sensors, cameras, wiring and control units, with coding or calibration required following some repairs.
How much does it cost to repair an LED Matrix headlight?
The cost of LED or Matrix headlight repair depends entirely on the fault. Modern headlights can contain LED modules, drivers, control units, cooling systems, sensors and complex electronics, so a complete headlight replacement is not always necessary.
Some faults can be repaired by replacing individual modules or components, while water damage, failed internal LEDs or physical damage may require specialist repair or complete headlight replacement. Matrix LED and adaptive headlights may also require coding, programming or calibration following repairs.
Because complete LED and Matrix headlight units can cost thousands of pounds, correct diagnosis before replacing parts can potentially save a significant amount of money.
What are the most common LED, Xenon & adaptive headlight fault codes?
Modern LED, Xenon, Matrix LED and adaptive headlight systems can store manufacturer-specific fault codes relating to LED modules, control units, headlight levelling, communication faults and calibration. Common examples we diagnose include…
Mercedes-Benz U118A02 – Left headlight range adjustment / communication fault
Mercedes-Benz B178392 – LED driving light control unit fault
Mercedes-Benz U120B97 – Headlight control / communication fault
BMW 800FC8 / 800FC9 – TMS headlight driver module / LIN communication fault
BMW 8041B6 – Headlight range control system fault
BMW 8041BA – Adaptive Headlight (AHL) system fault
Audi / Volkswagen Group C107E54 – Headlight basic setting or calibration fault
Audi / Volkswagen Group C117554 / C117654 – Left or right Matrix LED high-beam basic setting / calibration fault
Audi / Volkswagen Group U117100 / U116F00 – LED headlight control module communication fault
Porsche – LED Matrix, PDLS/PDLS Plus, headlight control module, communication and calibration faults
Tesla – Tesla-specific headlight and adaptive lighting alerts accessed through Tesla Toolbox rather than relying solely on conventional P-codes
Water ingress is also a common cause of modern headlight failures, particularly where moisture reaches LED drivers and control modules mounted to the headlight assembly.
Using ODIS, Mercedes-Benz XENTRY, BMW ISTA and Tesla Toolbox, we can accurately diagnose headlight fault codes and determine whether the problem lies with the LED module, control unit, wiring, communication network, levelling system, calibration or the headlight itself before replacing expensive components.
What should I do if my headlights or tailights are water damaged?
If your car’s headlights are water damaged, then this can lead to electrical faults and should be checked and repaired by a mechanic immediately. This is typically due to damaged seal, but can also be due to cracks in the unit itself. Either way, we can repair the damage and replace any units or wiring if necessary.
Are the lights checked during an MOT test?
All the lights and reflectors are checked during an MOT test to make sure they are functional, in the correct position and are the correct colour. The types of lights include:
- Headlights
- Brake lights
- Indicators
- Daytime running lamps
- Registration plate lamps
- Fog lights
Can I change a car bulb myself?
On some vehicles, yes. Conventional halogen bulbs can often be replaced relatively easily, although access can vary considerably between models.
Modern German vehicles increasingly use Xenon, LED, Matrix LED and adaptive headlights where the light source may not be a simple replaceable bulb. These systems can contain high-voltage Xenon components, LED modules, control units and intelligent lighting electronics, with some replacement components requiring coding, programming or calibration.
If you’re unsure which lighting system your vehicle has, we can identify the correct repair and replacement requirements.
