Can issues with the exhaust system result in an MOT fail?

Yes, issues with a vehicle’s exhaust system will result in an MOT failure. During the test, it is assessed to ensure it’s free from leaks, fitted securely and does not produce excessive noise. The vehicle’s carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions are also tested, and since the exhaust plays a crucial role in controlling these emissions, any issues are likely to result in an MOT failure.

FAQs | Exhaust System Repairs

Here you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about a car’s exhaust system. If you notice any issues such as unusual sounds, smells, or fumes, get in touch with our team who can diagnose the problem and advise on the repairs.

What are the main components of the exhaust system?

Here are some of the key components in a car’s exhaust system:

  • Manifolds – funnels exhaust gases from the engine cylinders into a single pipe.
  • Catalytic converter – converts harmful emissions into carbon dioxide and water.
  • Oxygen sensors – monitors how much oxygen is in the exhaust gases so the ECU can adjust the fuel mixture accordingly.
  • DPF or GPF – particulate filters which trap soot from the exhaust gases.
  • Resonator – cancels out harsh exhaust noises.
  • Muffler – reduces the noise produced by the engine’s exhaust system.
  • Gaskets and clamps – ensure proper sealing of certain components.
  • Exhaust tip – the part visible from the car’s exterior.

The main function of the exhaust system is to transport gases away from the engine and out of the rear of the vehicle. The exhaust system is not only important for the engine’s performance, but also reduces harmful emissions and loud noises.

Modern vehicles use several exhaust after-treatment systems to reduce harmful emissions, depending on the engine and vehicle specification.

The catalytic converter uses a honeycomb structure coated with precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful emissions.

Diesel vehicles may also use a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which captures soot produced during combustion and periodically burns it away through a process called regeneration. If a DPF repeatedly becomes blocked, it is important to identify why regeneration is not taking place correctly rather than simply cleaning the filter. You can find out more on our DPF diagnostics and cleaning page.

Modern petrol engines may use a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF), sometimes called an OPF, which performs a similar role by capturing fine particulate matter produced by direct-injection petrol engines.

Together, catalytic converters, DPFs and GPFs form an important part of the vehicle’s emissions control system.

  • Cracked or leaking pipes in the exhaust system.
  • Damage due to corrosion or rust.
  • Clogged or damaged catalytic converter.
  • Faulty oxygen sensors.
  • Blocked GPF or DPF.
  • Broken or loosely fitted mounts.

Some signs to look for are:

  • Unusual noises – if the car’s exhaust sounds louder, this is an indication that there is a crack or leak in the exhaust system. A rattling or knocking sound typically indicates a broken mount but could also be internal damage to the muffler or catalytic converter.
  • Unusual smells – this is a sign that the exhaust is leaking. This is very serious as the exhaust gases are toxic.
  • Reduced performance – this typically indicates a blocked catalytic converter or DPF/ GPF.
  • Engine management light – issues with the vehicle’s exhaust system can trigger the engine warning light.
  • Exhaust fumes – these can indicate one of several issues with the exhaust system or engine.

If the exhaust is producing smoke, this is a common sign that there’s an issue. Here are some common problems:

  • White smoke – this could indicate a coolant leak.
  • Black smoke – this may be due to excess fuel being burnt.
  • Blue smoke – this is typically a sign that the car is burning oil.

If you notice any of these issues, get your vehicle checked as soon as possible.

If you notice that your exhaust is louder than usual, this indicates there is an issue that needs looking into by a mechanic. Typically, it’s due to a crack which causes the exhaust to leak, but it could also be due to something like a failed gasket or problem with the muffler.

A blocked or damaged catalytic converter can restrict exhaust flow and prevent the engine from operating correctly. Common symptoms include…

  • Loss of power, particularly under acceleration
  • Poor engine performance or hesitation
  • Engine management light (EML)
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Failed emissions or MOT test
  • Excessive heat from the exhaust
  • Rattling noises caused by a damaged internal catalyst

Catalytic converters do not always fail simply because of age. Failure can be caused by underlying engine problems such as misfires, incorrect fuelling, excessive oil consumption, coolant entering the combustion chamber or prolonged emissions faults. These can contaminate, overheat or physically damage the catalyst.

For this reason, it is important to identify why the catalytic converter has failed before replacing it. Fitting a new catalytic converter without correcting the underlying fault can result in the replacement being damaged again.

Not only does the exhaust system affect emissions, but it also has a direct impact on the engine’s performance and fuel efficiency. In order for the engine to function properly, the exhaust system should push the exhaust gases out of the vehicle efficiently. If there is an issue with the exhaust system, it could create “back-pressure”, causing the engine to perform sluggishly.
