FAQs | Car Software Updates

Software updates play an important role in keeping many modern vehicles operating as the manufacturer intended. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about vehicle software updates and programming.

What is a vehicle software update?

A vehicle software update involves installing the latest manufacturer-approved software to improve the performance, functionality or reliability of your vehicle’s electronic systems. Updates can address known issues, improve drivability and ensure your vehicle is operating with the latest available software.

We provide software updates for a wide range of German vehicles, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, SEAT, Škoda, CUPRA and MINI. If you’re unsure whether we can update your vehicle, simply get in touch with our team.

Manufacturers regularly release software updates to improve vehicle performance, resolve known faults, enhance system functionality and optimise electronic control units (ECUs). In some cases, a software update may also be recommended as part of diagnosing an ongoing issue.

The time required depends on the manufacturer, vehicle and systems being updated. Different manufacturers approach vehicle software very differently:

BMW & MINI – Software programming can take several hours, as ISTA will often update multiple control units across the vehicle and bring the vehicle’s Integration Level (I-Level) up to the required software level.
Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, CUPRA & Škoda – ODIS software updates and SVM (Software Version Management) procedures are generally targeted to specific control units and can often be completed within an hour.
Mercedes-Benz & smart – XENTRY allows individual control units to be updated, with many updates completed within an hour. Larger infotainment, multimedia and COMAND software updates can take considerably longer.
Tesla – Update and programming time varies depending on the vehicle, system and procedure being carried out through Tesla Toolbox.

All programming is carried out with the vehicle connected to a suitable stabilised power supply, with any required coding, adaptations and post-programming checks completed afterwards.

Software updates can improve the operation of certain vehicle systems, enhance reliability and resolve known software-related issues. However, they are designed to optimise your vehicle in line with the manufacturer’s latest specifications rather than increase engine performance.

Our experienced technicians combine manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment with specialist knowledge of German vehicles to carry out professional software updates safely and accurately. We’ll always explain what’s required and ensure your vehicle receives the correct update for its specific model and system.

Yes, where supported. Many replacement control units require software installation, coding, parameterisation or adaptation before they will operate correctly. Using ODIS, XENTRY, ISTA and Tesla Toolbox, we can carry out manufacturer-level programming on supported vehicles.

We do not install or programme customer-supplied, second-hand or refurbished control units. Used modules can have compatibility and security issues and, in some cases, may have an unknown or potentially stolen history. Connecting or programming a stolen component could expose us to manufacturer or police investigation and put our manufacturer security access at risk, even if we were unaware of its history.

For this reason, we only install components we can source and verify through trusted channels.
We do not install or programme customer-supplied, second-hand or refurbished control units. This allows us to control the quality and compatibility of the components being installed and stand behind the completed repair.

These are manufacturer systems used to manage vehicle software and control unit configuration.

BMW I-Level (Integration Level) identifies the software integration status of the vehicle. When programming with ISTA, multiple control units may be updated to bring the vehicle to a newer compatible I-Level.
Volkswagen Group SVM (Software Version Management) is used through ODIS to manage software updates, coding and control unit configuration across Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, CUPRA and Škoda vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz SCN coding is typically carried out after a control unit software update or replacement, where required. Using XENTRY, the control unit is coded with the correct manufacturer parameters and configuration for that specific vehicle.

These manufacturer processes are why modern vehicle programming involves much more than simply connecting a diagnostic scanner and selecting “update”.

Yes. We carry out manufacturer-level software updates, programming and coding in-house at our Worcester workshop using ODIS, Mercedes-Benz XENTRY, BMW ISTA and Tesla Toolbox. These are the manufacturer diagnostic and programming systems used to access supported software updates and programming functions without sending the vehicle to a main dealer.

Where a particular procedure has manufacturer restrictions or specific requirements, we can confirm what is possible once we know the vehicle and work required.
Not every procedure is available independently, and manufacturer access can vary by brand, model and system. We can advise what is possible once we know the vehicle and work required.

No. A manufacturer software update installs an approved software version released by the vehicle manufacturer, typically to correct known issues, improve operation or bring control units to the required software level.
