What is a Dual-Clutch transmission?

A dual-clutch transmission is a type of automatic gearbox that uses two separate clutches rather than a conventional torque converter. Typically, one clutch controls the odd gears (1, 3, 5 and 7), while the other controls the even gears (2, 4 and 6). This allows the next gear to be prepared in advance, providing fast and smooth gear changes.

Different manufacturers use different names for this technology, including DSG on Volkswagen Group vehicles, S tronic on Audi, DCT/DKG on BMW, 7G-DCT and 8G-DCT on Mercedes-Benz, and PDK on Porsche. While they provide excellent performance and efficiency, these transmissions are complex and require the correct servicing, diagnostic equipment and specialist knowledge when faults occur.

FAQs | Dual-Clutch Transmissions

Here you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Dual-Clutch transmissions, how they’re serviced and maintained, and the potential repairs needed. Get in touch with our team today if you notice any issues with your car’s Dual-Clutch transmission.

What are the benefits of a Dual-Clutch transmission?

The main advantages of DSG, S tronic, DCT, DKG and PDK dual-clutch transmissions include…

  • Faster gear changes, providing a more responsive and engaging driving experience
  • Improved efficiency, with direct power transfer through the clutches compared with some conventional automatic transmissions
  • Smooth gear changes, as the next gear can be prepared before the current gear is disengaged
  • Strong performance, making dual-clutch transmissions particularly well suited to both performance vehicles and everyday driving
  • Automatic convenience with many of the efficiency and performance characteristics traditionally associated with a manual gearbox

Dual-clutch transmissions are fitted to a wide range of German vehicles, although manufacturers use different names for the technology.

  • Volkswagen, SEAT, CUPRA and Škoda use DSG, fitted to models such as the Golf, Tiguan, Leon, Formentor, Octavia and Kodiaq.
  • Audi uses the S tronic name on models including the A1, A3, TT, Q3 and Q5.
  • Mercedes-Benz uses DCT, including 7G-DCT and 8G-DCT transmissions fitted to various A-Class, B-Class, CLA and GLA models.
  • BMW uses DCT or DKG on selected models, particularly performance and M vehicles.
  • Porsche uses PDK, fitted to models including the 911, Boxster, Cayman, Macan and Panamera.

The exact transmission varies by model, engine and year, so not every version of these vehicles will have a dual-clutch gearbox.

SG and dual-clutch transmissions can store fault codes relating to the mechatronic unit, hydraulic system, clutch packs, sensors and internal gearbox operation. Common fault codes found across Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, CUPRA, Škoda, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche include:

P17BF – Hydraulic pump protection / hydraulic system fault
P189C – Insufficient gearbox hydraulic pressure
P0841 – Transmission fluid pressure sensor range / performance
P2711 – Unexpected or implausible mechanical gear disengagement
P177B – Clutch 1 tolerance limit reached
P177C – Clutch 2 tolerance limit reached
P072C – Transmission stuck in Gear 1
P073A – Transmission stuck in Gear 5
P073B – Transmission stuck in Gear 6
P073C – Transmission stuck in Gear 7

Manufacturer-specific fault codes are also common, particularly on Mercedes-Benz DCT, BMW DCT/DKG and Porsche PDK transmissions.

A gearbox fault code does not necessarily mean the gearbox or mechatronic unit needs replacing. Correct diagnosis requires the fault codes to be assessed alongside live data, hydraulic pressures, clutch adaptations and other test results to establish the root cause before recommending repairs.

The mechatronic unit is essentially the control centre of a DSG or dual-clutch transmission. It combines electronic controls, sensors and hydraulic components to operate the clutches and control when and how the gearbox changes gear.

Mechatronic faults can cause symptoms such as harsh or delayed gear changes, loss of drive, difficulty selecting gears, gearbox warning lights or the transmission entering limp mode.

Mechatronic units are also used in other dual-clutch transmissions, including Audi S tronic, Mercedes-Benz DCT, BMW DCT/DKG and Porsche PDK gearboxes.

Yes. A DSG or dual-clutch gearbox uses two clutches, typically with one controlling the odd gears and the other controlling the even gears. Depending on the transmission, these can be either wet or dry clutch packs.

Most DSG and dual-clutch transmissions also use a dual-mass flywheel (DMF) between the engine and gearbox to absorb vibration and provide smoother operation. Like a conventional clutch and flywheel, these components can wear over time and may eventually require replacement.

Some problems that require repair include:

  • Clutch pack wear – this can lead to slipping gears.
  • Mechatronic unit failures – this can lead to jerking and even complete transmission failure.
  • Transmission fluid leaks – this will cause poor performance and overheating.
  • Gear selector problems – this prevents engaging and shifting gears efficiently.
  • Transmission warning light – an exclamation mark or temperature gauge inside a cog.
  • Issues during gear changes e.g. delayed gear shifts, slipping gears or a rough/ jerky feel.
  • Unusual noises e.g. grinding or clunking when gear changing.
  • Fluid leaks – a red or dark brown puddle could indicate the transmission fluid is leaking.

If you notice any of these signs, get in touch to book your vehicle in for a diagnostic and repair.

  • The existing transmission fluid is drained and replaced with the correct high-quality OE specification transmission fluid.
  • Transmission filters are replaced where applicable. Depending on the gearbox, this may involve one or multiple serviceable filters, while some transmissions do not have a serviceable filter.
  • Gearbox seals, gaskets, drain plugs and other service components are replaced where required as part of the service procedure.
  • The transmission is filled to the correct level following the specified filling procedure and temperature requirements for that gearbox.
  • Diagnostic procedures, adaptations or basic settings are carried out where required.
  • The transmission is checked for leaks and correct operation following the service.

The exact service procedure varies considerably between DSG, S tronic, DCT, DKG and PDK transmissions, so we follow the correct procedure for the specific gearbox fitted to your vehicle.

Having a DSG transmission serviced at the required intervals is crucial to maintain the performance and reduce wear on the gearbox components which will otherwise lead to premature failure. Regular servicing prevents future issues and costly repairs, and also helps to improve performance and maintain fuel efficiency.

Most DSG transmissions should be serviced every 40,000-60,000 miles. You can check your vehicle’s handbook to find the required servicing schedule. If you’re unsure of the vehicle’s service history, and it has covered over 40,000 miles, then it’s a good idea to get the transmission serviced to maintain the performance and prevent wear.
