Wheel Alignment

Here at Recharged Automotive in Worcester, we only carry out complete four-wheel alignment rather than basic front or two-wheel adjustments.

Using our dedicated alignment ramp, we measure all four wheels and adjust every available setting required to bring the vehicle back within manufacturer specification, including toe, camber and caster where adjustable.

Once the alignment is complete, every vehicle is road tested to confirm it drives correctly and the steering wheel sits arrow straight. We can carry out wheel alignment on a wide range of vehicles, including lowered, performance and high-powered cars.

Wheel Alignment in Worcester

Wheel alignment can gradually move out of specification through normal use, but potholes, kerb impacts, suspension repairs and changes to ride height can also alter the vehicle’s geometry.

Incorrect alignment can cause uneven or accelerated tyre wear, pulling to one side, an off-centre steering wheel and reduced steering or handling quality. In more severe cases, it can affect the vehicle’s stability and road holding.

We carry out complete four-wheel alignment, measuring all four wheels and adjusting all available settings to bring the vehicle within manufacturer specification. Every vehicle is then road tested to confirm it drives correctly and the steering wheel is arrow straight.

What is wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment is the process of measuring and adjusting the vehicle’s suspension geometry so all four wheels sit at the correct angles relative to the vehicle and to each other. This includes settings such as toe, camber and caster where adjustable.

“Tracking” usually refers only to adjusting the front toe. That can correct part of the problem, but it does not tell you what the rear axle is doing. Rear toe and thrust angle have a major influence on the direction the vehicle naturally travels. If the rear wheels are effectively steering the car slightly to one side, the driver may have to compensate at the steering wheel even if the front tracking has been set correctly.

A proper four-wheel alignment measures the complete vehicle first. We can then adjust the rear geometry where applicable, establish the correct thrust line, and finally set the front wheels in relation to that. This gives a much more accurate result than simply adjusting the front wheels in isolation.

Incorrect geometry can cause uneven tyre wear, pulling, an off-centre steering wheel, instability and poor handling. This is why we only carry out complete four-wheel alignment, followed by a road test to confirm the vehicle drives correctly and that the steering wheel sits arrow straight.

Where additional camber or caster correction requires secondary adjustment bolts, eccentric hardware or other specialist components, these are charged separately and discussed with you before any additional work is carried out.

What are the signs my car needs a wheel alignment?

Some common signs include:

  • Vehicle pulling or drifting to one side
  • Steering wheel sitting off-centre when driving straight
  • Uneven or accelerated tyre wear
  • Vehicle feeling unstable or requiring constant steering correction
  • Alignment changing after a pothole or kerb impact
  • Recent suspension repairs, lowering springs or coilover installation
  • New tyres wearing unevenly or sooner than expected
  • It has been more than than 12 months since the last alignment check

We recommend checking wheel alignment every 12 months to maximise tyre life and keep the vehicle handling and tracking correctly.

FAQs | Wheel Alignment

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions about wheel alignment. If you notice any issues with your vehicle’s wheel alignment, for example, if it’s pulling to one side, get in touch today for a quote to get them realigned.

Why is wheel alignment important?
  • It ensures the car handles correctly and predicably.
  • It prevents uneven tyre tread wear.
  • It can improve fuel consumption. Having misaligned wheels can increase resistance and make the engine work harder.

Yes. The main wheel alignment angles are toe, camber and caster:

  • Toe: whether the wheels point slightly inward or outward when viewed from above. Incorrect toe is one of the biggest causes of rapid tyre wear.
  • Camber: the inward or outward tilt of the wheel when viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle. Excessive positive or negative camber can cause heavy inner or outer-edge tyre wear.
  • Caster: the angle of the steering axis when viewed from the side. It affects steering stability, self-centring and how the vehicle behaves in a straight line.

On a complete four-wheel alignment, we also look at the relationship between the front and rear axles, including rear toe and thrust angle, rather than simply adjusting the front wheels in isolation.

A car’s wheel alignment should be checked once a year, or sooner if any issues are encountered in between. It’s important to check the wheel alignment if the vehicle hits a pothole, kerb, or bump at speed, or if it has been involved in any type of collision or accident.

Our complete four-wheel alignment service is £125.

We do not offer basic front tracking. Every vehicle is measured across all four wheels, with all available adjustments made to bring the geometry within manufacturer specification. This includes setting the rear geometry and thrust angle correctly before finalising the front alignment, centring the steering wheel and road testing the vehicle afterwards.

If adjustment points are seized or heavily corroded, additional labour may be required. On older vehicles, some commonly seized components such as front track rods, Volkswagen Group rear spring arm bushes or BMW camber bolts may need to be replaced before the alignment can be completed correctly. We will always advise you before carrying out any additional work.

Where specialist camber or caster bolts or other adjustment hardware are required, these are also charged separately.

Wheel alignment and wheel balancing are not the same.

  • Wheel balancing ensures that the weight distribution within the wheel and tyre is even, to prevent steering vibrations and uneven tyre wear. It should be done whenever new tyres are fitted.
  • Wheel alignment ensures that the wheels are straight and positioned correctly. It should be done once a year, or if the car hits any potholes/ bumps/ kerbs at speed, or has been involved in an accident.

Yes. Lowering a vehicle changes its suspension geometry, so a complete four-wheel alignment is particularly important after fitting coilovers, lowering springs or other suspension upgrades.

We measure the vehicle once the ride height has been set and adjust all available geometry, including toe, camber and caster where possible. Unless instructed otherwise, we will always align the vehicle to manufacturer specifications.

If you have a preferred geometry setup for road, fast-road or track use, we can also align the vehicle to your supplied specifications.

On some modified or older vehicles, seized or corroded adjustment points can prevent the geometry from being set correctly. Components such as track rods, camber bolts, eccentric adjusters or suspension bushes may need freeing off or replacing before alignment can be completed. Where additional adjustable arms, camber bolts or other hardware are required, we will advise you before carrying out any extra work.

Yes. Worn suspension or steering components can allow unwanted movement in the wheels, making accurate alignment impossible or causing the settings to move again shortly afterwards.

We will never recommend carrying out a wheel alignment while known suspension or steering components are worn. These faults should be repaired first so the geometry can be set correctly and remain stable.

When we quote for suspension or steering repairs that are likely to affect wheel geometry, we will advise that a complete four-wheel alignment is required afterwards and include it within the estimate.

Tracking usually refers to adjusting the front toe only. It is often offered cheaply by fast-fit centres and tyre shops because it is quick to carry out, but it does not measure or correct the rear axle, camber, caster or the relationship between all four wheels.

A complete four-wheel alignment measures the geometry of the whole vehicle. We assess the rear axle and thrust angle first, then adjust the front wheels in relation to that so the vehicle tracks correctly, the steering wheel sits straight and tyre wear is kept even.

That is why we only offer complete four-wheel alignment rather than basic front tracking.
