Automatic Gearbox Servicing In Worcester
How often should an automatic gearbox be serviced?
Depending on the type of gearbox or transmission that is fitted to your vehicle, the gearbox intervals will vary by manufacturer. Some of our most common servicing intervals for transmissions include Mercedes 5-speed gearboxes and VW Audi Group & BMW DSG /DCT transmissions typically have an interval of 30,000 to 40,000 miles or 3 to 4 years – whichever occurs first. Mercedes seven-speed and nine-speed transmissions have an interval of 77,000 miles or five years. The ZF engineering 8HP gearbox which is fitted to larger Audis, Porsches and most BMWs are advised every 80,000 miles or nine years.
Regular servicing of the transmission oil and filter, can prevent costly repairs and dramatically extend the life and quality of the gearbox.

FAQs | Automatic Transmission Servicing
Here you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about automatic gearboxes and the maintenance they require. Get in touch today if you’re in the Worcester area and are looking to get your car’s automatic transmission checked and serviced.
What are the signs that my car needs an automatic transmission service?
We would advise servicing the transmission on a routine basis rather than waiting for issues to arise, but if you’re unsure of the vehicle’s history and notice any of the following signs, then it’s time to book in for a service:
- Delayed shifting – for example a rise in the RPMs before the car shifts into gear.
- Slipping gears – when the acceleration does not match the increase in revs.
- Vibrations or shaking when the transmission changes gear – this indicates that the transmission fluid is not lubricating properly.
- Strange noises when the transmission changes gear – this signals that certain parts may not be lubricated properly due to old or low transmission fluid.
- Burning smell – this indicates the transmission fluid is old.
- Red or dark brown fluid leaks – this indicates that the transmission fluid is leaking.
What are the different types of automatic transmissions?
There are several different types of automatic transmission systems including torque converter, dual-clutch (also known as DSG/ DCT), continuously variable transmission (also known as CVT), and automated manual transmission (also known as AMT). Here is a brief explanation of each of the different types.
- Torque converter: this type of automatic transmission has been around since the 50s but is still used in many modern-day vehicles particularly in Mercedes and the ZF Transmissions fitted to BMW & Audis. We have over 60 years combined experience within the workshop on these transmissions.
- Dual-clutch (DSG/ DCT): instead of using a torque converter, this type of transmission has two separate clutches – one to control the odd gears (1, 3, 5 & 7) and one to control the even gears (2, 4, and 6).
- Continuously variable transmission (CVT): instead of having fixed gears, a CVT transmission uses a belt and cone-shaped gears to result in smooth acceleration without “steps”.
- Automatic manual transmission (AMT): this is the bridge between manual and automatic transmissions. It uses a manual gearbox combined with a control unit which decides when to shift gears automatically.
Here at Recharged Automotive in Worcester, we have over 60 years of experience working on all types of cars and offer servicing for all automatic transmission systems. Learn more about our Dual-Clutch Servicing and Repairs here.

What are some common fault codes for transmissions you can recitfy?
Modern automatic and dual-clutch transmissions are electronically controlled and can store fault codes when problems are detected with the gearbox, clutches, mechatronics, sensors or hydraulic system.
At Recharged Automotive, we diagnose and repair gearbox faults across Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Škoda, including Mercedes 5G-Tronic, 7G-Tronic, 9G-Tronic and DCT, BMW ZF and DCT, and VAG DSG and S tronic transmissions.

P17E8 – Transmission Ratio / Gear Monitoring Fault on applicable BMW transmissions
BMW vehicles frequently display manufacturer-specific EGS fault codes when diagnosed using BMW ISTA, particularly on vehicles fitted with ZF 6HP and ZF 8HP transmissions.
A gearbox fault code does not necessarily mean the gearbox itself has failed. Problems can be caused by transmission fluid condition or level, electrical faults, speed or pressure sensors, clutch wear, valve body problems, mechatronic faults, software or internal mechanical wear.
We carry out a technical assessment of the transmission and its control systems to determine the actual cause of the fault before recommending repairs.
What does an automatic transmission service include?
An automatic transmission service can include the following:
- The transmission fluid is drained or flushed, and new fluid is added so it reaches the proper level.
- The transmission fluid filter is replaced as this can collect debris over time. This allows the fluid to flow properly and prevents it getting contaminated as quickly.
- The pan is cleaned and checked for any damage. The gasket is also replaced to prevent leaks.
We can discuss your vehicle and the level of service required before you book in for an automatic transmission service.
What does the transmission fluid do?
The transmission fluid plays a crucial role in ensuring the transmission system works properly, by lubricating the moving parts e.g. gears, bearings and clutches. The fluid coats the metal parts to protect them from corrosion and reduce wear. It also helps to cool down the system and prevent overheating which will otherwise lead to transmission failure.
Why does the transmission fluid need replacing?
The transmission fluid will get dirty over time as it gets contaminated with small metal particles and breaks down with heat exposure. This is a part of the natural wear process, and means that the fluid needs replacing at set intervals so it can still perform its crucial functions. Clean transmission fluid can come in all colours, but a good indicator it’s in good condition is if it’s bright and vibrant in colour as opposed to old fluid which is often black or brown.
What can cause the transmission fluid to leak?
If you notice any puddles underneath the car that are either bright red or dark brown, this could be the transmission fluid leaking. Usually this is due to a worn gasket or seal, but could be due to a damaged transmission pan. In any case, the leak should be investigated by a mechanic as soon as possible, as low transmission fluid levels can cause the system to wear prematurely and even fail completely.
How long do automatic gearboxes last?
Automatic gearboxes can last over 200,000 miles, but this depends on how well they are maintained. Regular servicing and transmission fluid changes are crucial to prevent wear and overheating. Driving habits will also affect the lifespan. For example, stop-start traffic and aggressive acceleration will put the transmission under more stress and wear leading to earlier failure.
What are the most common issues with automatic transmissions?
Some of the most common problems we see with automatic transmissions are:
- Dirty or old transmission fluid – this leads to a whole host of problems such as premature wear on metal parts, strange noises, burning smells, slipping gears and vibrations.
- Fluid leaks – this leads to low transmission fluid levels and is usually caused by a worn seal or gasket, overfilled transmission fluid, or a damaged pan.
- Clutch wear – this will result in slipping gears, delayed engagement, and can produce a burning smell or strange sounds.
