Intake Valve Carbon Cleaning
Here at Recharged Automotive in Worcester, we have decades of combined experience working with direct-injection petrol and diesel engines and diagnosing the carbon build-up problems commonly associated with them. We use the professional TUNAP intake cleaning system and specialist cleaning media to safely and effectively remove carbon deposits from intake valves and ports, a process commonly referred to as walnut blasting.
Intake Valve Carbon Cleaning in Worcester
Direct-injection engines can be prone to carbon deposits building up around the intake system and valves. On petrol direct-injection engines, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than washing over the back of the intake valves, allowing oil vapour and crankcase gases to gradually form deposits.
Diesel engines can also develop significant intake carbon build-up from a combination of EGR gases, soot and oil vapour. Over time, these deposits can restrict airflow and contribute to poor running, reduced performance, hesitation, increased fuel consumption and other drivability issues.
Professional intake media cleaning is one of the most effective ways of physically removing heavy carbon deposits and restoring the intake system without damaging the valves or ports.

Engine intake valve cleaning in Worcester
Our intake carbon cleaning service includes:
- Removal of the intake manifold to access the affected intake ports and valves
- Inspection of the intake system and level of carbon contamination
- Cleaning using the professional TUNAP Valve Clean system and specialist granulate, rather than conventional walnut shells
- TUNAP media is purpose-designed for valve cleaning, with a controlled grain size and no sharp abrasive edges, allowing heavy carbon deposits to be removed without damaging the valve or port surfaces
- Application of TUNAP neutralising solution after cleaning, which helps dissolve any remaining cleaning media and reduces the risk of residue being left behind
- Vacuum extraction of the loosened carbon deposits and cleaning media
- Reassembly of the intake system with replacement seals or gaskets where required
- Final checks and engine operation test after reassembly
This gives us a more controlled and professional cleaning process than conventional walnut blasting, while still achieving the same objective of physically removing heavy carbon deposits from the intake system.
What is walnut blasting?
Walnut blasting is a commonly used term for physically removing heavy carbon deposits from an engine’s intake valves and ports. Traditionally, crushed walnut shells are blasted into the intake system using compressed air while the loosened carbon and cleaning media are vacuumed away.
At Recharged Automotive, we use the professional TUNAP system and specialist cleaning media rather than conventional walnut shells. This is safer as the TUNAP media is dissolvable and has less risk of any media entering the the cylinders and causing damage.
Engine intake valve cleaning in Worcester
Why is intake valve cleaning necessary?
Over time, carbon deposits can build up around the intake valves and ports, restricting airflow into the engine. This is particularly common on direct-injection petrol engines, while diesel engines can also suffer significant intake contamination from EGR gases, soot and oil vapour.
As deposits become more severe, they can disturb airflow into the cylinders and contribute to rough running, hesitation, misfires, reduced performance, increased fuel consumption and engine fault codes.
On petrol engines, carbon deposits can also contribute to abnormal combustion. Deposits within and around the combustion chamber can retain heat and create hot spots, while their physical volume can slightly increase the effective compression ratio. Both effects can increase the engine’s tendency to knock or detonate. Modern engine management will often respond by slowing ignition timing to protect the engine, which can further reduce performance and efficiency. This relationship between combustion deposits and increased knock tendency is well established in engine research.
Where intake deposits are heavy, chemical cleaners are often unable to remove them effectively. Media cleaning physically removes the accumulated carbon from the valves and ports, restoring the intake passages and helping the engine operate as intended.

FAQs | Intake Valve Carbon Cleaning
Here you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about engine intake cleaning. If your vehicle has a direct-injection engine and you notice any issues with the performance or fuel economy, get in touch with our team who can assess the engine and determine if an intake valve carbon cleaning treatment will be beneficial.
What are the benefits of intake valve carbon cleaning?
Removing carbon deposit build-up in the intake valves with walnut blasting offers many benefits including:
- Improving air flow to ensure the engine’s performance and acceleration is maintained.
- Improves fuel economy as the carbon deposits interfere with proper combustion and lead to poor fuel efficiency.
- Helps to prevent issues such as engine knocking, misfiring, and rough idling.
- Keeps the engine in good condition which can help to extend its life and prevent costly repairs.
- Being more effective than chemical cleaning.
How do I know if my car needs an intake valve carbon cleaning service?
Some signs that your engine may need walnut blasting include:
- Rough idling
- Poor acceleration
- Low fuel economy
- Engine knocking
- Misfiring
Which vehicles can benefit from intake carbon cleaning?
Carbon cleaning is most commonly required on direct-injection petrol and diesel engines where deposits build up around the intake valves, ports and inlet system.
It is particularly common on engines such as Volkswagen and Audi TFSI/FSI, BMW direct-injection petrol engines, MINI, Mercedes-Benz CGI engines and many modern turbocharged petrol engines. Diesel engines can also suffer heavy intake contamination from EGR soot and oil vapour.
Not every vehicle needs this treatment at a fixed mileage. We recommend it based on symptoms, inspection and the level of carbon build-up rather than replacing or cleaning parts unnecessarily.
How long does intake valve carbon cleaning take?
Walnut blasting usually takes between 3-6 hours. The vast majority of the time taken is due to the preparation steps including removing the intake manifold and other components in order to access the intake valves.
What are the steps involved in an intake carbon cleaning service
- The intake manifold is removed to gain access to the intake valves and ports.
- The engine is positioned so the valves being cleaned are closed.
- TUNAP specialist cleaning media is blasted into the affected ports to remove the carbon deposits.
- The loosened carbon and cleaning media are continuously vacuumed away.
- TUNAP neutralising solution is used to help dissolve any remaining media.
- The intake system is reassembled with new seals or gaskets where required, followed by final checks and an engine running test.
Why are walnut shells used?
Traditional walnut blasting uses crushed walnut shells because they are abrasive enough to remove carbon deposits while being soft enough to avoid damaging the metal surfaces.
At Recharged Automotive, we use TUNAP specialist cleaning granulate instead. It is purpose-designed for intake valve cleaning, with a controlled particle size and shape to remove heavy carbon deposits safely and consistently, without damaging the valves or intake ports.
